The original site of Riverbank was located on the San Gabriel River in what is now Arcadia. The town was founded by Spaniards in 1795, and soon became a major center for wine production. In 1821, the Mexican government awarded Rancho Los Nietos to Francisco Palou de la Garza, who built a ranchon at present-day Riverbank. In 1827, Antonio José Altamirano grant Rancho Santa Anita to his brother Miguel Barreto. This grant included land that now forms part of Downtown Arcadia. In 1835, John Cranch purchased Rancho Santa Anita from Miguel Barreto. He used it as pastureland for his cattle and began to build a mansion there called Chapultepec Castle. In 1839, he sold Chapultepec Castle to James Shields for $8000. It was later renamed Shields Mansion and again changed hands several times before becoming home of the California State Assembly in 1922 and 1933. In 1848, two brothers named George William & John Sutter bought Rancho Rodeo from Antonio José Altamirano for $10200. They used it as their cattle ranch and began construction on what is now North Park Boulevard in downtown Arcadia. On October 11, 1850, they named their new ranch after themselves – Sacramento County (now Sacramento). They continued working on Sacramento County until their death in 1902; their son George Walford Sutter took over the ranching operation and developed it into one of Northern California's most successful agricultural communities during the early 20th century
