Riverbank, California is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 3,652 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the San Francisco Bay and is located within Richmondhill Communities Unit. The name "Riverbank" is derived from its location on the San Francisco River near Fort Point and Treasure Island. The townsite had been developed as an agricultural community with homesteads dating back to 1849. A post office called "Richmondhill" was established in 1850, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1868, John Davenport donated land to create a public park that became known as Richmondhill Park. In 1903, city officials agreed to annex part of Richmondhill for development into a city; this annexation created the current boundaries for Riverbank. The City of Richmond annexed additional land around it between 1907 and 1910 which included much of what now makes up RiverbankTownships 1-3 and 4-6; these annexation terms were not ratified by the voters because they did not include authority over river channels or water resources (). A general store opened in 1908 along what is now Main Street in Riverbank; it later burned down but left behind evidence that an early settler named George Waddell used woodchips as insulation for his home during wintertime. By 1912 there were six stores in town with a population of 500 people; all but one closed by 1916 due to World War I economic hardship. During World War II, hundreds of local men enlisted in the military and many jobs were lost because no housing could be found for them except on Ft Worth Peninsula where they built barracks out of concrete blocks - thereafter known as "blockhouses".
