Riverbank is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. It is about 26 miles east of Fremont and 25 miles west of Stockton. In 1854, John Sutter founded what would become Riverbank on the south bank of the San Joaquin River. He named it after his home town of Holmdel, New Jersey. At first, Riverbank consisted only of Sutter's cabin and a few acres around it. The first stores were built in Riverbank in 1857 by James Strange and Wm Ewing. In 1865, another store was built by George Aiken and Denton Burton. The first post office was established at Riverbank in 1867. In 1870, two more stores were opened: one by Haughton & Co., and one by Copley Bros.. In 1872, pioneer John Eldridge started farming here with his brother-in-law David Ziegler from Redding Township in Orinda County; they also bought some land from Uriah Shafter on which to build their farmstead (now part of Walnut Creek). Samuel Morse donated land to help them build their farmstead too; it still stands today across the road from their old homestead site (the Morse House Museum). In 1875–76 CEldridge organized what would become known as the Central Pacific Railroad while living hereabouts; he helped found Calaveras County Agricultural Society #1 near where he now lives (Calaveras County Historical Association). That same year CEldridge married Eliza Jane Ladd at First Presbyterian Church (now part of Holy Angels Episcopal School) hereabouts; they had three children: Alice Eliza CEldridge CBE born December 2nd 1875; Clementine Elizabeth Eldridge born November 12th 1880; Edwin Franklin Eldridge born January 15th 1886.) A second rancho was organized nearby called Rancho Bernardo belonging to Francisco Jara who had settled there about 1840s before becoming mayor of Sacramento City along with his brothers Miguel de la Cruz y Juárez y Cerda and Manuel Antonio Jara y Herrera (1820-1896), all natives or residents of Alta California... Rancho Bernardo came into being about 1865 when Jacob Riis registered for patent for an offering ground for cattle between Sacramento Street and Monterey Street north side river Frontenac Avenue... soon afterward other grazers began showing up there including several Americans such as Rufus King who leased 640 acres out West near Mission Creek... By 1870 Mateo Ramos had taken over most shares but continued to lease parcels until his death in 1888 leaving 10 tracts total remaining unleased until 1913 when Don Pedro Ramos purchased them all adjacent to current day Guadalupe Road Bridge over river South Slope rancho boundaries don Pedro RAMos singlehandedly completed key elements necessary for irrigation development beginning with building North Glen Canyon Irrigation Canal starting circa 1912 well before present day Interstate 80 freeway construction began)... prior thereto ranchers had managed water resources primarily through adobe rain gardens or ponds set back from stream margins between hillsock ridges ---------------------- By 1860s much western CA was under US jurisdiction following Mexican Cession Trail conflict

In 1849, the first post office was established in Riverbank. In 1852, a railroad was built through Riverbank and the town became an important rail junction. The town's population grew rapidly during the early 20th century and by 1914 it had reached 100 residents. By 1920, Riverbank had annexed the neighboring towns of Forestdale and Pennington. The city of San Bernardino annexed Riverbank in 1926. In 1953, the city of Riverside annexes Riverbank as well. The City of San Bernardino declared bankruptcy in 1995 and merged with other cities in California to form the current state of California. Riverbank is now part of unincorporated areas within San Bernardino County.
