Riverbank is a small town in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont–Salinas–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Riverbank comes from nearby Indian Wells Creek which runs through the town and provides water for irrigation. Other early names for Riverbank include "Hondo", because it was on a trading route between Mexico City and Alta California; and "Rancho Viejo" (Old Ranch), because it was one of several ranchos that were ceded to become part of Riverside County in 1881. A post office called Gardena opened in 1876, and remained open until 1915. The first settlers arrived around1879 when ranchers granted land to 10 families who built homes on what is now south Main Street. By 1886, there were 100 residents living in Riverbank according to county records. In 1898, during World War I, riverboats unloaded supplies at the old Stockton-San Bernardino Railroad Bridge across Rives Creek and delivered goods upriver to local farmers. This bridge still stands today as part of Riverbank's downtown area streetwall

The Riverbank community was located in the eastern San Joaquin Valley on the bank of the San Joaquin River. The community developed around a cotton gin and other early industry, including farming, ranching, and logging. In 1856, the community was renamed for Major General Edwin H. Rivers, who had led Union forces during the California gold rush. The riverbank community declined following World War II as agriculture became more important in the area. However, some revitalization efforts have been underway in recent years and Riverbank is now a thriving neighborhood with shopping, dining, and cultural attractions.
The land that is now Riverbank was first settled in 1847 by pioneers who crossed the San Joaquin River from Stockton. The name of the village, which at its peak had a population of around 100 people, originated with the river's name which was given to it by Native American guides who warned travelers of an upcoming risk. In 1853, when California became a state, Riverbank became part of Modesto County. The town gradually grew asjoiners and farmers moved in and started raising crops and chickens. By 1907, there were over 1,000 residents in Riverbank. After World War II, the area saw a massive influx of workers from nearby cities due to the booming industry during the postwar period. Many single-family homes were built on what is nowRiverbank Boulevard between 1951 and 1957; this led to increased traffic and congestion on the street which caused some deterioration in the infrastructure that supportedriverbanking activities. However, overall Riverbank experienced relatively stable development until recently when increasing gentrification has led to increased noise levels and vandalism alongthestreet
