In 1821, General John C. Fremont founded Fort Bear Lake in what is now Riverside County. The fort served as a trading post on the San Joaquin River and was used by both American and Mexican traders. In 1843, when California became a state, the Fort Bear Lake site became part of what is now known as Riverside County. The early settlers in the Riverbank region were mainly farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. In 1851, James Fenton discovered gold near present-day Fillmore and decided to establish a mining camp there. However, due to difficulties getting access to gold deposits, Fenton abandoned his camp in 1852. The first permanent settlement in what is nowriverbank was made by Mormon missionaries during their trip from Salt Lake City to Stockton in 1850. The Mormons built a chapel at whats current day Fillmore Street, which served as their summer headquarters until they moved back into Nauvoo Hills in 1856. In 1861, after several skirmishes with Confederate forces along the border of California and Nevada, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order calling for all men over 21 years of age to register with militia units called “the posse comitatus” or horse guard units organized specifically against crime within specific geographic areas (such as Sacramento County). This Order also authorized military duty within rifle ranges dotting Northern California between Menifee Valley and Redding; however this activity primarily concernedhunting game rather than fighting rebels or other threats to law enforcement across state lines. In 1836, the first post office was established at Riverbank. The town was named after the river that ran through it. In 1853, a gristmill and sawmill were built in Riverbank. The town grew rapidly and by 1870, there were over 100 residents. In 1908, a railroad station was built in Riverbank. The town quickly became an important transportation hub for the surrounding area. By 1920, the population had reached 1,500 residents and the community had become a bedroom community for Stockton. However, in 1930, Riverbank lost its status as a city and merged with Stockton to form one large city.
