Riverbank is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Riverbank is located on the San Joaquin River and its tributaries. It is east of Fresno and lies within the Fresno–Tahoe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Riverbank were Spanish Franciscans who journeyed upriver from Bakersfield during the 1770s looking for an alternative route to Stockton via Truckee Lake. In 1848, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Lodi while travelling downriver from Sacramento; they named their discovery "Riverside" after nearby Riverside County. The first post office at Riverbank was established in 1853; it continued operation until 1880. In 1870, a millrace along the river became known as "Mountain Mill". By 1885, over twenty mills had been built downstream of Mountain Mill by local farmers for grinding flour for shipment upriver to Stockton and other cities. By 1900, three thousand people lived in Riverbank proper and more than two hundred businesses functioned downtown including banks, restaurants, theaters and stores that sold everything from groceries to shoeshine parlors. The water supply was improved by building a large dam on Fish Creek which created Lake Amador (now part of Lake Oroville) northwest of town. Riverbank is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Tuolumne River east of Bakersfield. The town was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Patton. The name comes from an old Indian word meaning "bridge over the water." The first post office was established in 1888. In 1907, Riverbank became part of the newly formed Kern County and had its own government. In 1913, Riverbank incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly; it reached its current size by 1920. It has since become one of the most active communities in Kern County and has seen dramatic changes throughout its history: from agricultural to industrial to residential to commercial. Famous residents include cartoonist Bob Clampett and actors Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Lewis. Today Riverbank retains much of its early pioneer character with restored buildings (such as Patton's home), agricultural land, hobby horses/motorcycles, antique cars/trucks, rodeos & other events held every year at various locations around town including nearby Mount Shasta State Park
The Riverbank community is located in Riverside County, California. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company employees who built a small cabin on what is now known as East Side Street in 1868. The company name was changed to the Riverside and San Bernardino Railroad Company in 1875. In 1907, when the city of Riverside was founded, Riverbank became part of it and remained so until 1957 when it became its own independent municipality. In 1915, when I-215 was constructed through downtown Riverside, Riverbank voted to keep its own numbering system for streets and avenues within the city limits. This system continued until 1951 when all eastside streets withinRiverbank were renumbered 1-2-3 with a 1 being northbound and 2 southbound and 3 being eastbound. Riverside's annexation by Los Angeles in 1912 created new boundaries for that city which severed Riverbank from Los Angeles proper. As a result of this annexation, many businesses within Riverbank closed or switched operations to other cities during the 1920s because they could no longer compete with LA's large population growth rates. However, most businesses reopened after World War II because LASA had instituted regulations which limited suburban growth in downtown Los Angeles while allowing annexed neighborhoods such as Riverside to grow rapidly without penalty. In 1957, after years of discussion between both organizations (Riverside City Council & Unified School District), Riverbank separated from Riverside into an individual municipality under the guidance of Mayor Royce Youngbloodsson III who declared "This is our town - we're going to stay here." Many residents rejoiced at this development as separation gave them more control over their local government; however some felt that separation would only lead to duplication of services between municipalities instead of synergy since each one still relied heavily on services provided by their larger neighbor(s). After several years of struggling budgeting and lack of support from mayor Youngbloodsson III & City Council members alike, riverbank council voted unanimously on July 15th 1968 to merge with neighboring City Of Westminster effective August 1st 1968 under leadership of then Councilmember Eldon Whitehurst Jr.. Although highly anticipated by some councillors due to its similarity in size& history (including both having been born/raised near riverbanks),Riverbank's merger came as a surpriseto many constituents who felt they had been taken advantage of by Westminster while their town languished neglected economically.
