Riverbank is one of the oldest settlements in Kern County and dates back to 1846 when prospectors discovered gold on the banks of the Kern River. The town was named after nearby Riverside County, which at that time included what is today Riverbank and other areas east of Bakersfield. The city began to grow rapidly during World War II as a result of its connection to military forces stationed there. The city's landmark buildings were erected during this time including Camp Evans (later known as Goodyear), Kelly Air Force Base, and Fort Irwin. In recent years, Riverbank has experienced increased development due to its location within easy access by Interstate 5 and its proximity to several major university campuses.
The Riverbank area was part of the Rancho San Diego land grant given to José Antonio Burri in 1821. The first post office at Riverbank was established in 1826. In 1852, the town of Riverbank was organized, and a school was built. A fire destroyed the school in 1863, and it wasn't rebuilt until 1904. The first store at Riverbank opened in 1865. The town grew rapidly, and by 1880 it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, by 1886 the population had decreased to 100 people due to migration from other parts of California. In 1915, Riverbank became an incorporated city with a population of around 150 people. In 1924, a bridge over the Sacramento River Bridge was built south of town to connect it with Walnut Creek City on the north side of Sacramento County. The bridge also connected with rural areas east and west of town on what is now called I-5 highway. However, this connection quickly fell apart due to changes in traffic patterns; as early as 1928 there were reports that sections of I-5 were being used for smuggling operations across the river into neighboring counties
