Riverbank is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Warner City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Riverbank" comes from the confluence of two rivers: the Kern River and the Tuolumne River. The original town site was on a high bluff overlooking both rivers. In 1868, when surveyors began to explore new land for a railroad through Kern County, they discovered an area that would become Riverbank. A year later, construction began on what would become the first railroad station in Kern County. The town grew quickly because of its location and its access to plenty of water resources. In 1935, Riverbank became one of seven cities within the newly formed Riverside-San Bernardino County region (later called Greater Los Angeles). The city's rapid growth led to some problems; for example, there were not enough streets or sidewalks in many areas of the city. However, over time Riverbank has developed into one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with a rich history and diverse cultural attractions. Today, Riverbank remains an important commercial center within Greater Los Angeles and is home to several major retailers including Macy's Department Store and Sears Tower mall as well as numerous smaller businesses and restaurants including 7-Elevens and Subway sandwich shops. Riverbank is a small town in the California Central Valley that was founded in 1887. The town is located on the Milk River, which flows through the town. The name of the river comes from Spanish "Río de la Rambla," meaning "the path of the rams." The first settlers in Riverbank were men who had been brought overland by wagonloads of goods from what is now Fremont. They built their homes near where they would tend to their herds of cattle and sheep. Some of these early settlers, such as Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hearn, became millionaires as entrepreneurs in this new land. In 1870, a group of capitalists led by James Irvine bought 4,000 acres (16 km) around present day Riverbank for $3,000. This land was known at that time as Rancho Rinconada because it belonged to Don José de la Peña y Ortega. In 1875, James Irvine sold his interest in Rancho Rinconada to Francisco Paloucarzco for $15,000 cash plus an option to buy additional land along the Milk River. Don José de la Peña y Ortega continued to live in rancho until he died in 1886. After his death, his son Manuel took charge of rancho and began developing it into a successful agricultural enterprise with irrigation systems and large barns/houses east of town on Big Trees Creek. He also developed a sawmill on Clearwater Creek which manufactured lumber for buildings and other items until 1935 when it closed down due to competition from local mills productively utilizing more efficient machinespelters/machines then at that time
The first Europeans to find the present-day Riverbank area were Spanish explorers in 1769. The land that now includes Riverbank was part of Rancho San Bernardino, a grant given to Juan Manuel de la Vega by King Spain in 1821. The town of Riverside was founded on the site of what is now downtown Riverside in 1848 and soon became an important commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region. In 1903, City Hall was built on what is now riverfront property adjacent to the University of California at Riverside.
