By 1940, there were thirty-six businesses with a payroll of $25 million dollars. In 1950, riponsmiths became incorporated as an unincorporated community within the city of Sacramento County with 1,200 residents. In 1970 it withdrew from Sacramento County to form its own government. As of 2000 the population had grown to 3,500 residents. A number of industries have been located within or near Ripon over time: agriculture (grocery stores/convenience stores; milk processors; cheese factories), automotive manufacturing (vehicle parts dealerships; truck manufacturers), information technology (computer systems integrators), retail trade (retailers of general merchandise such as clothing stores; shoe retailers), professional services (lawyers/accountants). Many local businesses continue to operate except for loss making restaurants or other small operations that cannot afford to switch to online sales or compete against larger national chains

In 1941 an air-raid shelter was constructed in honor of military personnel stationed at nearby Folsom Field during World War II. In 1984 Ripon became a city with mayor position; it has since been renamed Arroyo Grande City three times due to its close proximity to both Arroyo Grande Dam and other water resources as well as its role as an agricultural center for much of Southern California
