Ripon is a small town in the Inland Empire of California, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pomona-Arroyo Grande Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first established as a post office in 1872, and has since grown to be an important agricultural center with a strong commercial sector. Ripon is located on the banks of the Central Valley River, which forms its eastern border. The town has three main streets: Main Street (north), Oak Lane (south), and Woolcott Road (west). Ripon's history can be traced back to 1872 when it was founded as a post office by John Ladd and Jacob Swartzell. The first postmaster was Hiram Aikenhead. At that time, Ripon consisted of just five homes and two businesses. Today, there are over fifty businesses in Ripon employing more than 100 residents. One of Ripon's most famous citizens is Edwin Epps who served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 and 1959 to 1963. He also served as president of Orange County from 1967 to 1971 and 1975 to 1977. In 1908, John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor and physicist, came up with the first true television camera. In 1922, he developed the Baird Television Research Institute in London to develop new technology for television. In 1929, he invented the scanning video image projector which allowed movies to be projected on large screens without having to be viewed head-on. The projector was later replaced by the CRT ( Cathode Ray Tube) in 1951. In 1948, Baird developed an improved form of TV called "scanning black and white" which allowed live broadcasts over short distances using inexpensive equipment. This technology was eventually used in televisions worldwide.

In 1897, the French scientist Leconte developed a similar instrument called the Monochromator which allowed for color observation under certain conditions. In 1907, German scientists named Otto Hahn and Fritz Haber developed what is now generally considered to be the world's first electron microscope which could resolve objects up to 100,000 times smaller than a human hair. Ripon, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by San Joaquin County to the east, Kern County to the west, and Nevada County to the north. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Some of its notable features include Ripon Dam and Ripon Lakes. The first people to live in what is now Ripon were Native Americans who were known as the Yokuts. They built a small village on an old mission site in 1828. In 1849, they abandoned their village and moved upriver to what is now Fresno. There they founded a new village called Mission San Gabriel Arcangelista which still stands today. The Yokuts lived here until 1852 when they moved again upriver to what is now Bakersfield. In 1853, these same natives founded another town called Thomasville near wherepresent-day Fresno stands today. This town later became known as ripon because of its proximity to riparian areas that produced watermelons for export. In 1857, two brothers named Arthur and William Hutton started farming in what is now Kern County with help from some friends they had made during their previous villages building campaigns. They named their farm "Hutton's Grove" after their friend and colleague Harry Hutton (1820-1900). By 1865, William Hutton had become a successful farmer with his own herd of cows and 3 horses whileArthur Hutton continued farming with assistance from his brother until his death in 1890. During this time period there was also growth in other industries such as shipping and lumbering but it primarily relied on agriculture for employment so rural poverty remained prevalent throughout much of this time periods despite significant progress being made within industry overall! After Arthur Hutton's death his widow inherited his land which she developed into an agricultural community referred to today as Ripon Village which grew rapidly due to her husband's success! She also purchased additional land adjacent to her original home which she used for housing, shopping center & school district before selling it all off in 1928 creating one of the most prosperous agricultural communities ever! Todaymuch of Rripon Village remains unchanged since then including its iconic adobe buildings dating back over 100 years!
Ripon was founded by Juan Rodriguez in 1879. The town was named after Captain John Ripon, a Revolutionary War lieutenant who had helped to capture Gibraltar. In the early years of its existence, Ripon was a small frontier town with few resources and no roads. But it became an important railroad hub in the 1880s when the Central Pacific Railroad first came through the area. The town continued to grow as a result of its importance, and by 1902 it had reached its present size. Ripon has experienced some significant changes over the years. In 1916, the city purchased 2,500 acres (10 km²) of land north of the town for $1 million. This area served as Ripon's downtown until recently when development began there instead. In 1984, Ripon repealed its incorporation as a city and reverted back to its pre- incorporation status as a village
