Ripon, California is a town located in El Dorado County, California. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. A post office called Ripon has been in operation since 1868. The name comes from the Spanish word "ripa" meaning sandalwood and "tono" meaning place. The first settler in Ripon was John Houstoun who arrived on horseback in 1837. In 1839, Hiram Bogan built a cabin on the banks of the Sacramento River. He also farmed land in Ripon for many years. In 1862, Augustus McCoy purchased some of Bogan's land and built a house there which remains standing today. On December 7, 1865, George Wickersham married Mina Dietrichs at the church near his home and this became the beginning of their family tree that still thrives to this day. In 1868, James Fenton bought 640 acres of land east of present-day Ripon from Hiram Bogan for $5 per acre ($40 per lot). This is considered to be one of the earliest purchases of property in Ripon history and it helped establish Fenton as its first resident official. The town began growing quickly after this purchase as more people started moving into what would become its nucleus - primarily due to natural resources such as sandalwood trees that grew abundantly around hereabouts. A post office called Ripon was established in 1868 and served the entire El Dorado County area until it closed its doors in 1960; however, postal service continued to be provided by mailsmiths stationed throughout El Dorado County until 1981 when all services were discontinued effective January 1st following federal budget cuts set out by then President Reagan against then-President Jimmy Carter's efforts to preserve local government funding As ripa means sandalwood (and tono means place) so too did riponia mean " Settlement Point ."
