Ripon has been inhabited by the Native Americans for over two hundred years and it became part of Mexico after the Mexican–American War. After the war, American settlers arrived and started to settle in what is now Ripon. In 1881, they founded the townsite of Ripon as a hunting ground for white men and their dogs had killed many live deer since 1868 when Blackpool Station was established on Rancho San Francisco de las Palomas near Bakersfield. This area served as a center of trade with local tribes who furnished goods like hides and feathers to ranchers in exchange for maize, beans, cattle and other items that were grown on the rancho. The first post office was established at Ripon in 1888. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location near water resources and its ability to ship goods by boat or train from Bakersfield to inland cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. By 1912, there were 7 businesses in Ripon with an average sales volume of $1,500 per month! The growth of Ripon led to increased traffic on roads leading into town which caused some problems such as inadequate infrastructure such as sidewalks and streetlights that made it difficult for pedestrians or motorists to cross streets without getting wet or getting lost sightlessly down narrow alleyways known locally as "the alleys". In 1916 riponed-born Royden Ebright became president of Southern Pacific Railroad Company He recommended improving transportation links between Los Angeles and San Francisco through new routes including one connecting Atwater Pass with Sacramento via Marysville; this route would have cut much travel time off Train ride from L.A./S F
