In 1875, Ripon residents began to import binoculars from England. At first, the binoculars were used for Hunting and Fishing purposes only, but soon became popular among farmers and other outdoor enthusiasts in the area. By 1902, there were more than a dozen businesses in town selling binoculars. The popularity of binoculars continued to grow until the early 1900s when technological advances led to the development of cinema and photography which made it difficult for people to see objects up close. Consequently, many people started using mechanical telescopes instead of taking pictures with theirbinoculars. In 1919, American businessman Harry Payne developed a new type of telescope called a periscope through his invention of an air-filled tube that allowed users to see details at a distance. Although periscopes were not very successful commercially, they continue to be used by amateur astronomers as well as professionals until today.

In 1901, with America becoming an independent country, Ripon became part of the new United States as part of Mexico's Baja California Territory. Ripon experienced some growth during America's roaring twenties but then slowly declined during World War II because so many jobs were taken away by war production capacities. However, since the late 1990s ripons have begun to experience significant redevelopment which has resulted in increased population (nearly 7% over 2000), increasing job opportunities (especially within the local government sector) and rising property values across much of downtown area . One downside has been that development pressures have caused traffic congestion on main street which limits access to many businesses; nevertheless overall development seems positive given current circumstances

The fairgrounds are still used for events today: the Ripon Fairgrounds are home to the Arnold Schwarzenegger Presidential Library and Museum, as well as the California State Fairgrounds where the state fair is currently being held each year. In 1978, a new amphitheater and Event Center were built on what is now Main Street in Ripon to replace an old barn which had been standing there for many years. The amphitheater seats up to 3,000 people and has a green roof that helps keep it cool during hot days or times of high humidity. Ripon is located within Interstate 80 between Sacramento and Placerville; exit 188 leads east to Placerville while exit 189 leads west to Sacramento City
Ripon is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about east of Fresno and north of Bakersfield. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1851 by John H. Ripon as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1872, Ripon became part of the new state of California and it was renamed Ripon after John H. Ripon's father-in-law, James Wirt Snively. On January 17, 1888, a fire destroyed most of town center and killed 10 people; it is still considered one of the deadliest fires in California history. The town continued to exist until 1971 when it merged with neighboring townships to form Redding Township
