Ripon was founded in 1853 by Hiram Ripon and his wife Submitra. It became an incorporated city in 1911. The community began as a small fishing village on the north shore of Lake Elsinore, about east of Walnut Creek. By 1907, Ripon had grown to include a post office and six families who raised chickens, pigs, ducks, horses and cows for local markets. The first school in Ripon opened in 1905; it was replaced by one built on land donated by George Wickersham in 1911. In 1916 the first electric streetcar arrived here from Hayward; it ran until 1955 when it was replaced by a bus system. In 1935 Richard Nixon became Mayor of Contra Costa County after being elected as a member of the California State Assembly from San Francisco Bay Area District 3; he then served two terms as Mayor before being elected Governor of California in 1941 and 1944. As Governor Nixon visited Ripon on several occasions including one visit that year which included remarks at Ripon's dedication ceremony for its new City Hall Annex building which he described as "a model example...of functional Government."
