The first permanent settler in what is now Ripon was George Hargrave, who arrived in 1851. A post office called Ripon was established in 1857, and the town charter was granted on November 15, 1861. by David Denton. Ripon experienced some significant growth during World War II when the USAAF used it as an airfields for bombing raids over Southern California. After the war, the town declined as a result of economic difficulties and dwindling population due to agriculture and other pursuits such as fishing and tourism. However, there has been recent redevelopment with new housing developments coming online since 2000 including: The Grapes at Sunrise Ranch subdivision which opened in 2002; The Oaks at ripon Commons which opened in 2007; and The Lakeshore development just east of town which began construction in 2016.
