Ridgecrest is bordered by Irvine to the north and east, Newport Beach to the south and west, and Fullerton to the southwest. The first post office in Ridgecrest was established on December 12, 1876. The name of the town comes from Mount Simon which overlooks it. The original settlers were farmers who named their home after a nearby mountain range called "Ridge Crest". In 1907, construction began on what would become Southern Pacific's first main line railroad between San Francisco and Anaheim – now known as Amtrak's California Service. At this time Ridgecrest became an important commercial center for citrus production due to its location near two key canals that led into Los Angeles County: Canoga Park Lake and Simi Valley Lake. However, during World War II Ridgecrest developed into a military base as part of Project Paperclip due to its strategic location on Highway 82 between downtown LA and Imperial Valley Military Airfield northwest of Simi Valley Airport. After the war ended in 1945 Ridgecrest experienced rapid growth as many people moved here from other parts of Orange County looking for new opportunities following the war's ending; this growth halted when Pershing Drive was constructed just east of town in 1951 which cut off much potential development away from town centre. In 1976 Canyon Road (later I-5) was widened making access into town easier while also widening Interstate 5 so that trucks could travel down both sides without having to go around a sharp turn near downtown; however, this increased traffic congestion on I-5 which caused problems for residents such asincreased noise levels from all the cars travelling down canyon road at night.; consequently in 1984 Randolph Rd., located just northeast of downtown along interstate 5 towards Corona opened up allowing more easy access into town Centre despite some complaints about high traffic volumes during peak hours.; although Randolph Rd has seen alot less traffic over time it still experiences heavy morning/night loads because there are no other alternatives available especially since most businesses have closed by 7am or later during peak hours.: Downtown business owners complain about increased prices associated with added truckloads coming through their business during rush hour.; they argue that if they could only get rid of those extra vehicles outside their doors then they would be fine but unfortunately not everyone can or wants to comply with these laws

In 1916, movie star Douglas Fairbanks established himself as an entrepreneur in Ridgecrest with his production companyFairbanks Feature Films Incorporated (FFI). FFI produced films such as "The Thief of Bagdad" (1921), "Moby Dick" (1922), and "Wings Over Europe" (1925). During World War II, Ridgecrest served as a bombing target because it had a significant concentration of ammunition dumps used by Axis forces during World War II . After 1945, many businesses abandoned their downtowns and moved away from downtown into new neighborhoods such as Eastridge Village and Shirlington Terrace ; these areas are now home to many retirees or people who have retired from more traditional occupations like manufacturing jobs or service industry jobs outside the city limits
