Ridgecrest, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 8,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. Ridgecrest is known for its panoramic views of Mount Wilson and downtown San Diego. The community was founded in 1916 as a small cattle ranch by George Henniker and his wife Anna. The name "Ridgecrest" comes from a ridge that runs east to west near the town's center. In 1922, Henniker donated land to establish a high school and post office in Ridgecrest. In 1951, the school became Ridgecrest Junior College and remains so today. The post office closed in 1957 but reopened as an outdoor bookstore in 2001. In 1904, George Waugh purchased 640 acres (2 kilometer) of land southwest of Ridgecrest for $8 per acre ($/1 hectare). Waugh developed this land into what is now known as Waugh Rancho Santa Fe National Monument which includes much of what is now Ridgecrest including many homes built during World War II between 1942 and 1945 by the United States government pursuant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 9396 which authorizes the construction of military camps on public lands for use during World War II. Since 2000, there has been efforts underway to redevelop portions of Waugh Rancho Santa Fe National Monument into a mixed-use development called Mesa del Norte which would include housing, offices, retail stores, and other amenities such as a golf course and spa complex on 7 hectares (17 acres). There have also been proposals to build Interstate 5 through Mesa del Norte with access from both sides by ramps leading upriver to downtown San Diego; however these plans are currently stalled due to environmental concerns about possible impacts on nearby residential properties...............................................

During World War II, Ridgecrest served as an airfield for the United StatesAAF during Operation Crossroads which aimed to cross over country between Japan and China; during that time it also produced munitions for use in that war effort In 1965, after years of debate among community members about whether or not they should become an independent city, voters approved incorporation into San Bernardino County under then-mayor Jimmie Davis's plan which gave rise to what is now known as "City Hall District". There have been several attempts by City Council members to secede from San Bernardino County but all have failed due to strong opposition from within the community
