Ridgecrest is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ridgecrest is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino National Forest and is surrounded by chaparral and oak woodlands. The first permanent settler in this area was George Wright who arrived in 1857. By 1860 there were over 100 people living here. In 1871 John Wesley Powell discoveredetch Mountain and Ridgecrest became his discoveriespot since it was adjacent to his Rancho Cañon de Santa Ana property which he bought from José León de Fuentes on July 5 of that year for $5,000 (). In 1892 developers James Manners and Harry Weems developed a housing tract called "Morningside" just east of town off Hwy 9 about one mile south of its current location (the present day intersection of Hwy 9 & Via Las Pulgas). In 1912 community organizer Averell Harriman organized what is now known as the Valley Women's Club to promote home economics classes in local schools as well as social work opportunities for women veterans returning from World War I(). Mrs. Harriman served as president until her death in 1943 (). The first store opened in Ridgecrest with 20 items including groceries, hardware, cigarettes and soda water (.50¢ per can) at the corner of Via Las Pulgas & Via La Mesa before expanding into general merchandise soon afterwards ().
