A post office was established at Ridgecrest in 1894, and by 1899 there were over 100 residents. In 1907, William Randolph Hearst founded Hearst Castle in what is now Hearst Rancho Mirage outside of Palm Springs; it became one of his largest properties and remains today as one of Southern California's most important tourist destinations. By 1920, almost all of what is now Riverside County had been annexed by Los Angeles County; but because much of eastern Riverside was still unincorporated territory, several small towns within Los Angeles county continued to exist—Ridgecrest being one such example—until they too were placed under annexation by Los Angeles county in 1928. In 1953, when Interstate 10 was completed through southern Riverside into downtown Los Angeles County, it bypassed both Old Town Pasadena (to which Ridgecrest had close economic ties) and Little Tokyo east of La Crescenta Boulevard (to which Ridgecress had even closer ties), leaving only two remaining incorporated communities within LA county: West Hollywood and Encino Junction (both adjacent to Beverly Hills). As a result of this bypassing policy problematical for these two municipalities since their homes constituted a large percentage (if not majority) of their respective populations cast an unwanted shadow over their annexations proceedings; Talks about renexation eventually led to negotiations that finally resulted in them becoming part of Orange County effective January 1st 1959 pursuant to then state law 24 Cal . 3d 547 §1 et seq., thus relieving those cities from any legal obligations arising from their incorporation into eitherLA nor OC counties until they choose voluntarily or are renexed pursuant thereto pursuant to law following successful vote by both chambers thereof upon passage without amendment on November 15th 1957. Ridgecrest, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,784 at the 2010 census. Ridgecrest is located on State Route 237, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Sacramento and 25 miles (40 km) north of San Bernardino. The first permanent settler in Ridgecrest was George Hinkle in 1854. The town began as a group of homesteaders who came to Ridgecrest from various parts of California during the 1850s. In 1876, James Waddell founded a cattle ranch that ran parallel to State Route 237 and became known as Waddell Ranch. In 1888, A.B. Drake established a flour mill and cheese factory in Ridgecrest that remain active today. In 1916, George Coker established the Coker Vineyards near Ridgecrest and remains one of the most important wine production areas in California today.
Ridgecrest is located in the San Bernardino Mountains, some 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It was founded on November 3, 1887 by George W. Ridge and his brother-in-law John L. Cady as a small rancho near what is now Riverside County. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location, good farming soil, and easy access to water resources. The town's first store opened in 1889. In 1923, Ridgecrest became an incorporated city.
