The park was dedicated on October 26, 1906 and included 522 acres (2 km²). Today it includes more than 16 miles (25 km) of trails, including several loops that lead into counties away from downtown Riverside: Antelope Valley (to Rialto), Carlsbad Caverns National Monument (to Escondido), Mojave Desert National Preserve (to Palmdale), Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge (to Redding), and Pershing State Park near Chino Hills Heights . Wanger had originally planned to create an amusement park but found that there were no suitable sites available within Riverside or nearby San Bernardino County while still allowing enough privacy for pedestrians and cyclists along I-10 . He also believed that he could get local support for his project by appealing to their patriotism towards United States during World War I . Ultimately however only 2% of Riverside's residents supported annexation into Los Angeles County while almost all those who wanted property annexed into Los Angeles did so instead - meaning Wanger Park remains unincorporated today despite being one mile east of Downtown Los Angeles proper

Railroads brought laborers to build construction projects such as the new courthouse and jail in Ridgecrest in the late 1800s, which led to a decline in farming activity but an increase in industry including foundries, machine shops, lumberyards and breweries until World War II when radioactivity made mining difficult or impossible.
