The town was founded in 1887 by pioneers John and Maud Ridgecrest as a logging camp on the slopes of Mount Stroudsburg. The name came from their rancho de la Mesa which extended into what is now Napa County. In 1912, when Ridgecrest became a city, it annexed parts of Soquel and Walnut Creek. The first post office opened in Ridgecrest on March 7, 1889. The ZIP code for Ridgecrest was 94523 at that time. The first store in Ridgecrest was the General Store on Main Street which operated from 1888 to 1912. A second store opened on Third Avenue in 1914 and continued until 1932 when it closed because of prohibitionism laws passed by Governor Hiram Johnson Jr.. In 1951, the City Council voted to annex University Heights and Mountain View from so-called "Poverty Row" north of downtown because these areas were then becoming increasingly unaffordable to residents living below poverty lines due to falling agricultural prices and an increase in manufacturing jobs throughout Northern California during the postwar period. This annexation allowed for more dense growth near Downtown while still protecting much unincorporated land within Poverty Row which remained rural for many years afterwards. A fire destroyed most of downtown Ridgecrest on Christmas Eve 1970 killing one person and injuring over 50 people
