Ridgecrest is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 14,539 at the 2010 census. Ridgecrest is known for its high-capacity kits programs which have helped to reduce crime and vandalism in the city. Ridgecrest was first founded by entrepreneur Adolph J. Schwarzschild in 1911 as a small town on the edge of the Mojave Desert, west of Los Angeles. He started manufacturing air-purifying devices and Trading Post kits in his home garage and sold them door to door. In 1922, he moved his company to a new location on Canoga Avenue in Silver Lake and began making air-purifying devices for use by farmers who used their land for growing maize, beans, potatoes etc., not having access to clean water or an air purifier. In 1937, Schwarzschild married Lillie Sperry Roemer and together they started producing water filters for use in residences and businesses in Southern California. The couple went on to produce over 100 different types of filters before retiring from their business in 1978. In 1992, Lillie Schwarzschild died at the age of 96 after many years of health problems associated with Alzheimer's disease; her husband continued work until his death two years later at 102 years old. The first post office in Ridgecrest was established in 1892. The city was named for General George S. Patton (1885-1942), who served as Chief of staff to General Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II. In 1959, Ridgecrest became home to Southern California's first high school for girls when Pomona College opened its doors there. In 1962, Ridgecrest welcomed its second high school when Cathedral High School opened in nearby Cathedral City. In 1990, Bishop McGuinness High School became Ridgecrest's third high school when it merged with Holy Cross Christian Academy in neighboring Redlands
