Gun Grips in Ridgecrest, California began their history in 1892 when a Mr. Edward P. Sheehan and his wife adopted a young dog named Pistol from the Waco kennel. pistols were first used for target shooting and as protection against wild animals. handguns were not brought into California until after the 1906 earthquake which caused extensive damage to many of the buildings in Ridgecrest. The first stores that sold firearms in Ridgecrest were located on Main Street near the post office where residents could buy Trigger guns, revolvers, shotguns and other firearms. In 1922, an arms dealer by the name of Hogue opened up shop on Old Ranch Road which is now home to First National Bank of Ridgecrest. At this time, handguns were still being bought and used primarily for personal protection or hunting purposes. The sale of rifles was also becoming more popular at this time as people started to feel safer with larger numbers of firearms around them. In 1934, Mrs. John Fenton erected her home on Sutter Avenue just south of what is now called Gadsden Street and she became one of the most influential figures in Ridgecrest’s gun history because she had a large collection of pistols and rifles which she stored indoors throughout the winter months while her home froze over ( something that still happens today). This allowed residents who desired to purchase a firearm but did not have access to an appointment or carry permits to do so without fear that they would be arrested for owning a weapon without permission from government officials ( something that still happens today).Mrs. Fenton also played an important role in helping promote gun safety by hosting educational seminars about how to use firearms properly (something that continues today). From 1934-1964 there was only one store per year located on Main Street which functioned as both a dealers store and training center for new gun owners/answers to questions about how to use their weapons safely(something thatstill happens today). During this time periodgun grips became more standardized with different types having different shapes and sizes which made it easier for consumers to find what they were looking for( something that continues today ).In 1968, Mrs. Fenton passed away leaving her husband George with responsibility over her collection( somethingthat has continued unchanged through all these years ).
