The town was founded by Captain John Sutter during his exploration of what is now Inyo County in 1858. He named it after his rancho called "Ridge Crest" where he had his house built. During World War II, Ridgecrest was occupied by the United States Army's Ninth Infantry Division which constructed an ammunition dump, foundry, and other infrastructure near today's Highways 395 and 93. In 1951, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9492 which ordered all American Indian reservations be turned into national forests. This order became effective when it was published as Public Law 813 on August 15th, 1951. On October 15th of that year, Congress passed H R 3590 which amended Presidential Order 9492 to provide for management of Indian Forest lands by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). On January 16th, 1957, President Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10583 which directed BLM to begin construction of a road from Topaz Pass east-northeastward through Inyo National Forest to connect White Mountain Lake with San Bernardino National Park via Ridgecrest Canyon Road. The road soon became known as Interstate 80 and has been used by humans since its completion in 1967. It took until May 14th 1984 for BLM to clear all remaining trees on over 121 acres within present-day Ridgecrest limits; this cleared land then became available for development as part of Rancho Niguel National Monument #2 (now Half Moon Bay National Wildlife Refuge). Today ridgecrest offers panoramic views across Mount Whitney towards Black Rock Desert beyond while still being close enough to enjoy day-to-day activities such as shopping at local stores or visiting nearby trails like Dysart Wilderness Preserve or Doheny Hills Open Space Preserve

Ridgecrest is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. Ridgecrest is located on the Anza-Borrego Desert National Monument and U.S. 101 Alternate between Riverside and Rancho Mirage. The first European to visit what is now Ridgecrest was Jedediah Smith in 1821 when he discovered a large oasis near present-day Spring Valley. He named the area "Ridgecrest" for the ridges of sandstone hills that surrounded it. The settlement started as a few families who ranched in the area around 1875; by 1886, there were over 100 people living in Ridgecrest proper and 300 more living on adjoining ranches. In 1915, Ridgecrest became part of Inyo County when it was created from parts of Kern and Mono counties. However, because Inyo County lies within Mexico's Baja California Peninsula boundaries, much of its infrastructure—including schools and county courthouse—was destroyed during World War II by Mexican forces occupying the region during Operation Overlord. Today, only a few scattered buildings remain from back when Ridgecrest was one of America's largest citrus towns; most notable are two conspicuous white posts – One at milepost 622 on State Route 10 (now US 101 Alternate), visible from miles away while driving down Donnybrook Road; and another at milepost 527 on Sunrise Highway (now SR 273), visible only if you climb up behind Mount San Jacinto off Sunrise Valley Rd., which is accessible via an unmarked dirt road just east of Interstate 880/SR 263 entrance). Other than these two landmarks, everything else has been replaced with plastic or metal sheeting or concrete - making this perhaps the last major American town to be completely destroyed by war measures! Inevitably though given its strategic location along US 101 Alternate – about 20 minutes south of downtown Riverside – some businesses have done well enough to return since hostilities stopped: restaurants like Red Lobster opened shortly after cessation of hostilities in 1945 while gas stations continued to serve propane until 1989; several golf courses have reopened since then too including one run by Disney that features an amusement park called Californian Land Disneyland Resort across from Interstate 880/SR 263 entrance). There are also efforts underway to rehabilitate various local buildings not mentioned above but still needing restoration such as restoring historicINTERSTATE 880 signs erected following closure of I-880 mainline years ago although they are quite hard to spot without help!
