Ridgecrest began as a small ranching town in 1879, when brothers John (John) Ridge and George Ridge constructed a post office near their rancho called Scotts Valley. By 1906, Ridgecrest had over 1,000 residents and was incorporated as a city under state law. In 1970, City Councilman Tom McCloskey successfully proposed annexing neighboring Riverside County so that Ridgecrest could benefit from more major freeway projects being planned in western San Bernardino County at that time – including I-10 and I-5 – while still holding onto its downtown core which remained an important commercial center with many businesses dating back to early 20th century such as Wernham's Pharmacy & Tobacco Store and The Grange Hotel (now known as Renaissance Manor).
