In 1853, General George Armstrong Custer reached Rodeo Road (now Interstate 580) at Rodeo Heights after completing his famous march across North America known as "The Great March". Many people in attendance at Rodeo Road include future Ulysses S Grant who later served as PresidentUlysses S Grant attended church services conducted by Reverend James Kappler and other missionaries at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church which stands to this day next to I-580 southbound exit #1A off I-880 across from Google headquarters

Polk and his army invaded California during the Mexican-American War and were met with resistance from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s forces in what is known as the Battle of San Jacinto. One hundred forty-eight men died during this engagement which helped drive Santa Anna out of Mexico City and into exile in 1848. This event also marked the beginning of rapid growth for Richmond because many new settlers came to seek refuge from war and persecution in what would become one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. On April 4th (the day after Texas Independence), General John Cranch arrived with his family tofound Richmond along with twelve others families under the leadership of Captains George Washington Hill and Nathaniel Macon.* In October 1850 Captain Hill donated land that would later become downtown Richmond* due to pressure from citizens feeling that they had not been properly consulted about development plans for their town center which included including a wharf on Danville Bayou* near present day Interstate 80*. The early years were tough for Richmond as its residents struggled against waves of immigrants arriving through Ellis Island seeking work opportunities or housing (). However, over time Richmond began to attract top talent from all over America*, helping contribute to its emergence as one of America’s leading cities by 1910*. During World War II much infrastructure was built in support of military effort including airfields*, bridges* and tanks*. The post-war boom brought more people and businesses into town but also led to increased crime rates which have persisted ever since *.
