Richmond, CA is the birthplace of American firearms. The first guns were made in 1847 in this city by George Armstrong Custer and his friend Amos Kendall. After the Mexican-American War, Richmond became a center for firearm manufacturing. In 1859, Captain George H. Thomas of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Regiment was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and required surgery to remove a piece of shrapnel from his brain that had entered through his right eye; he was the first person to be medically discharged with a rifle shot wound. As a result of this incident, Captain Thomas decided to become involved in firearms manufacture and founded what would eventually become Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company, which manufactured rifles and pistols under license from other companies such as Remington Arms Company. The Benjamin Cole Gun Show (1893) was one of the first gun shows in America where handguns were exhibited alongside rifles and shotguns. This event helped spread hunting handgun culture throughout America and set the stage for future gun shows around the country. There has been an annual Ben Cole Gun Show since 1893!

Richmond, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 134,851 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Northern California and one of the largest cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Richmond has two universities: Brown University and UC Berkeley. Richmond was founded by brothers John and James Richards in 1849 as a small settlement on the east side of then-university-owned land near what is now Midtown Richmond. The Richards brothers became known for their nursery business, and also built several homes there, before starting a grocery store and other businesses around 1854. In 1860, City Council voted to change its name to "Richmond" after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. At that time, it was one of only four American cities to keep its original name after the war. Afterward, it continued to be called "Richmond" until 1972 when it changed its name back to " Contra Costa". The center of town contains many historic buildings dating from before 1800 including The War Rooms ofistar House which served as headquarters for both Union General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War (1865–1868) and Captain James Wainwright during his failed attempt to capture Yosemite Valley (1879). Other attractions include Point Reyes National Seashore located just north of town off Interstate 80; Inner Harbor District featuring traditional Chinatown with its large 19th century building complex; Gastown neighborhood containing pubs/bars/restaurants dating back to 1790; Riordan Park features an olive grove & tennis courts;[and] Donner Hall site includes remnants of early Californian pioneer families' log huts used as summer homes by Governor George Pritchard and his family prior to Sacramento's creation as part of Imperial County in 1848
Gun sights have been around for centuries, and there are a variety of different types to choose from. Some of the earliest examples were crossbows which used iron sights. The use of gun sights allows shooters to aim their bow with precision, making it easier to hit your target. There are also more recent designs that use computer-aided design (CAD) technology, making sighting in much easier and providing better accuracy. In 1838, John Brownell developed a system called the "Brownells Sight". This sight allowed shooters to place an etched line on the barrel's bore in order to determine where the shot should go. This helped improve shooting accuracy by displaying where the arrow would land relative to the aiming point on the barrel. It was not until 1862 that George Buell designed and patented his own type of gun sight known as a "Buell Rifle Scope". This scope used four rotating barrels that allowed shooters to see through one lens at a time and then adjust their aim accordingly. With this type of sight, shooters could now hit targets at ranges up to 100 yards! The first true automatic firearms were created in 1907 by American inventor Theodore Roosevelt with his invention known as Project Gutenberg Gunsight (PG), which allowed users to fire rounds using merely their hand movements instead of having to take down telescopes or other instruments required for ranged shots. As machineguns became increasingly popular during World War II, gun sights began becoming less important and were replaced by radar-guided missiles or artillery fire control systems. The first sighting device using an eye chart to track a target was invented by Captain James Cook in 1770. A small telescope with a lens the size of a pencil was used to magnify the image of the target and then it could be read from an eyepiece on a ship's lookout.

During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, Richmond experienced significant demographic change due to waves of immigration from Asia (mostly Filipinos), African Americans (many brought here as slaves), Latinos (most coming from Mexico), and Europeans (chiefly Germans). This led to increased social tensions that were often exploited by local politicians. The city experienced several major riots throughout these years; two of which resulted in extensive damage to public property.
