The town was named after General John Forbes' home at Edinburgh on Long Island which had been abandoned following Forbes' victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek on October 16th 1847 during Mexico's Alta California campaign (and also known as Third Battle Of Buena Vista). Richmond grew rapidly due to convergence of two factors: American military stationed there during World War II (including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton) along with increased agricultural production brought about by improved irrigation systems brought about by water allocations from nearby cities like Berkeley and Oakland; furthermore, Japanese Americans living adjacent to or within easy commuting distance became increasingly racialized through internment during World War II until their liberation in 1945
