Today, Richmond remains one of the largest cities in Northern California with large industrial sectors and a high concentration ofaffordable housing developments. Richmond’s early history is intertwined with that of its adjacent towns: Concord (to its north), Fremont (to its east), Belmont (to its south), and Newark (to its west). These towns were all founded during or soon after the gold rush period when many people traveled to prospect for valuable minerals around this region. At first these settlements were tiny villages dotting gentle hills near what is now downtown Richmond. But as demand for land increased, so too did settlement within easy commuting distance of new mines and mills – including Concord to the north; Fremont to the east; Belmont to the south; and Newark to our west. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living in Concord alone! By 1860, more than 500 people lived in Fremont, 1,000 residents lived in Belmont, 2200 residents lived in Newark – making it one of America’s "breadbasket" cities! In 1865-1866 two major floods destroyed much of downtown Haywardville but not before it had become home to over 1000 people! By 1870-71 there were nearly 2000 buildings along Main Street between Sacramento Streetside warehouses late into evening Federal style! As each community grew they built their own schools - often donating land or building themselves - with instruction continuing until well into World War II when public school Instruction stopped abruptly due to war-time budgetary constraints. After much discussion it was decided that Arlington Heights would also be called Arlington Heights because many eminent Domain owners had moved away since annexation while others like Mrs Johnnie Fairfax had died leaving very little acreage undeveloped Additionally it was decided that since no street name could have been found honoring Mrs Fairfax then her original home property at 20th Ave & Wacker should also be honored
