The Rialtoscope, also known as a "trucker's scope", was one of the first scopes to be created. The instrument was designed for observation of small objects in addition to the more common hunting and fishing optics. It was made from wood and metal, with a tripod mount that allowed it to be used mounted on the back of a vehicle. The Rialtoscope became well-known throughout the United States during the mid 1800s, and is still used today by amateur astronomers.

The first scopes and telescopes in Rialto were built by Captain George Spalding in 1836. He was the brother of Capt. Jonathan Spalding, who founded the San Francisco Bay Battalion in 1846. In 1851, Captain John Sutter erected a large telescope on Mount Hamilton near Rialto while he was governor of California. This made Rialto one of the most important observatories in the world at that time. In 1861, American astronomer James Fizeau developed a powerful refractor telescope at Mount Wilson which became known as the First General Catalogue Telescope (GCT). This allowed astronomers to view objects much further away than ever before. In 1876, The University of California (UC) began offering professional astronomical courses at its Mt. Wilson Observatory where students could use GCTs and other scopes to study stars and planets. By 1913, there were over 250 scopes operating in Rialto with an average size of 2 feet (60 cm) aperture diameter and 80 inch (2 meter) objective lens focal length! These telescopes allowed researchers to image objects up to 100 million miles away! By 1922, all but one of America's major universities had Scopes Department staff working on astronomical research! Rialto also played host to several international observing sessions during World War I including one hosted by UC Berkeley which saw participation from over 60 countries!
Rialto is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. It is located on the Rialto River and has a population of around 25,000. The town was founded in 1848 by William Mulholland as an agricultural community. In 1872, it became a city and was renamed after Italian philosopher Leonardo da Vinci. The name "Rialto" comes from the Lucky Dragon story told by Matteo Ricci in his book "The Book of Life". Legend says that when Jesus Christ walked through the town, he saw a golden dragonfly perched atop a post near the river's edge. He asked what it was and was told that if anyone could catch the fly, they would be given eternal life. So Jesus set out to find someone who could catch the fly and his disciples did just that - they caught more than 100,000 dragonflies on their way back to Galilee! 2 miles downstream from Rialto are two bridges – one over the Rialto River and one over Calavera Road – which connect Rialto to its sister city of San Francisco. These crossings are also known as The Golden Gate Bridge (or Ponte Vecchio) because both spans were built in 1840 by George Stephenson under auspices of King Ferdinand VII of Spain as part of an unsuccessful effort to improve trade between Europe and Asia via land routes instead of water
