Rialto is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of San Bernardino and is bordered by Bronson Heights to the north, Redlands to the east, Florence to the south and west, and Perris to the northwest. The name "Rialto" comes from two Italian words - riva (stream) and allo (place), which together form "rilevanto". The first mention of Rialto dates back to 1499 when it was called Sestiere di Rialto. In 1525 it became part of Republic of Venice. In 1821 it became part of Mexican territory as part of Alta California. The first post office in Rialto was established in 1872. The settlement changed its name to Rialto after Captain Giovanni Antonio Rinaldo who led an expedition against Moros in 1795 during Josef Martinez' governorship of Alta California. He named his then rancho el Palo Alto y la Playa de las Palmas de Granada because he found a grove of palmes near what is now downtown Rialto. Spanish missionaries started arriving in 1847 and founded Mission Santa Ana de Asís on Presidio Road behind present-day La Jolla High School; they also built Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on nearby hills northeast of town about seven miles southeast from where today's La Jolla sits on topland soil above Stagecoach Bayou full of mangroves that extend intoLA Harbor). Mission San Francisco de Asis (1849-54) was also located hereabouts before moving across road 400 feet SWSW along coast towards Point Mugu Lagoon where mission buildings still stand today including OriginalMission Chapel & bell tower completed in 1861 (& earlier Piedra Negra Chapel #2), both used as military barracks until 1906 In 1865 Alexander Graham Bell sent a telegraph message from this site via ship anchored offshore about three miles southwestward just outside Gracias al Dios Gulf: "George Washington Howe." A plaque at street address 5555 Old Town Rd commemorates this event within easy walking distance from original location now occupied by Menlo Park Dept store parking lot! This early notoriety for telephone service helped spur development around present day phone lines with businesses like Safeway taking up land adjacent to Route 66 Business Loop corridor immediately northwest/northeast/southwest facing those same phone companies retail locations close enough for customers coming down Interstate 10 or Interstate 9 North/South directions!) From downtown you can walk out nearly 2 blocks onto busy Main Street past several dozen late 1800s era brick & mortar buildings etc., containing many historical resourcesopen TO THE PUBLIC FREE OF CHARGE!!

Rialto, California was founded in 1851 by John Sutter and his wife, Mary. The town is named after the Rialto River, which flows through it. The town was first known as Fillmore because of its location on the Fillmore Trail. In 1859, the townsite was renamed to honor John Cranch Grant, an American general who served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Grant had fought at Cerritos and reported back to Union General Ulysses S. Grant that Fillmore's defenses were "in a state of great inferiority." In 1870, Fillmore was annexed by San Francisco and Rialto became part of San Francisco. From 1871 until 1906, when it became a city, San Francisco ran the city government from here. In 1906, due to political changes in California and Oakland, Rialto became part of Oakland. On December 6th of that year it merged with other nearby cities into what is now called Alameda County
