Reedley is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 8 miles south of Fresno. It has a population of about 1,500 people and was founded in 1887 by my grandfather, Reed A. Myrick. The town was named after General John Reed who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became an American hero during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1887, and it operated until 1907. In 1912, Reedley married its first wife, Anna Ladd. They had five children before divorcing in 1932. Anna passed away in 1984; Reedley still maintains her namesake street address as part of its official municipal name (Anna Ladd Boulevard). In 1933, the United States Postal Service began offering mail service to Reedley through the establishment of a post office annex on Main Street. That same year saw another big change for the small town when it changed from an agricultural community to one that focused more heavily on manufacturing activities withinits borders—influenced by World War II’s demands for materials and products needed for production at military installations around the country. Manufacturing activity increased so much that by 1951, there were six businesses operating within downtown Reedley limits: three cotton mills (the Chiappa Mills Company; Donahue Corporation; Eastman Kodak) and three textiles firms (Pelham Mills Company; Mohawk Mills Company; Western Samoa Textile Corporation). By 1959, industrial parks had been constructed all around downtown to support these new operations: Pelham Park supplied munitions manufacturers with raw materials while Eastern Parkway processed finished products destined for military installations all over North America; Mohawk Park manufactured tanks while Western Samoa Textile Corporation produced uniforms for U.S., NATO allies such as Britain and France respectively).
