Reedley is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 5,924 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of Marin County and on a peninsula between San Francisco Bay and the North American mainland. The first people to live in Reedley were Native Americans who hunted game near what is now downtown. In 1853, John Reed started cultivating rice in his garden northeast of town. In 1864, he founded the Pacific Electric Railway and moved his company's main office from San Francisco to Reedley to be nearer investors. In 1865, he built a sawmill on his property southeast of downtown that continued production until 1902. In 1867, Drury Gorman opened the first hospital in Marin County with care for wounded Civil War veterans. He also erected a Gothic Revival-style stone chapel which still stands today across from his surgery center at 415 First Street NE (now part of University Village). In 1872, Captain George Hearst developed land northwest of town alongshore of Sausalito Creek for an estate known as "Hearst Ranch". The area would later become known as Reedy Point State Park. He named it after himself and developed it into one of the most expensive developments in Marin County at that time with mansions and lookout towers replacing farms and residences. A year later in 1873, William Randolph Hearst purchased Sausalito Point from Captain George Hearst for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $105 million in 2019). He began expanding into new areas including parts of San Rafael Peninsula east of Sausalito Creek and built large estates there such as Belvedere Hill and Miramar Beach - both now within city limits of Sausalito proper. One reason why he chose Reedley as his new headquarters was because its location afforded easy access to bothSBU professors who taught at Sonoma State University (later UC Berkeley) on one side and Hearst's own yacht harbor on another side making it easily accessible for business meetings during those days when transportation was often difficult or nonexistent outside cities due to political unrest during this time period; furthermore SBU professor Napa Valley College had just completed construction adjacent to Hearst Bluff taking over some farming lands nearby so SBU students could attend classes closer to home without leaving their homes! He also commissioned two buildings - tower house #2 which still stands today next doorto Tower House No 3 which housed library services before they relocated inside Redwood City Hall following severe fires that destroyed most of downtown Redwood City late 1800s/early 1900s
