Reedley has a rich history with firearms. The city was founded in 1868 by James Reed and his wife, Lydia. It was named for the Reed family, who were early settlers in the area. The first gun shop in Reedley opened in 1872. A gunsmith named George Waddell operated the shop from its inception until he died in 1914. In 1916, John Lennon purchased a revolver from Waddell’s store. Over the years, other celebrities have bought and sold guns through Reedley’s stores including President Bill Clinton and rock icon Neil Diamond. In 1978, Reedley passed an ordinance that banned handguns within city limits.
