Reedley began as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Sacramento to Bakersfield and then to Stockton and Merced; its first post office was established in 1868. In 1870, Reedley became an independent town when it formed part of Butte County. It had a population of only 50 people when it incorporated as a city on April 12, 1892. City officials chose the name "Reedley" because they wanted their community to be associated with early Pioneers such as Captain David Reedy (1794-1872) and his son John D., also known as "Jock" (1847-1931). In 1862 Jock Reed built what is now called the Old Town Hall which remains standing today as one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. When California achieved statehood in 1850, Reedley voted to become part of Fresno County instead due to its location near Fresno's original capital site – Clovisqua Creek – but later rescinded its decision after being compared unfavorably with other newly minted county seat cities like Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay Area towns like Oakland or Berkeley that were designated county seats based on their size rather than their location within specific counties or regions! “It would have been very much against my grain for any new community to be set up outside my old home—and so I appealed to those who governed our county for wisdom and sagacity in setting up such an important town inside our own borders—and received Their reply positively,—that we did not want any new communitiesoutside our boundaries just at this time; but that if there should be any increase hereafter in population beyond what we could accommodate within our present limits we should think about setting up another town some distance away from us; but for the present we will content ourselves with having this one here snugly enclosed within our own limits." -John D.'Sreedy (1868-1992)
