Reedley is a small city located in the Inland Empire of California, about 25 miles west of Los Angeles. The name Reedley was given to the community by General James K. Polk in 1879 as part of his effort to rename all the new towns in southern California after American presidents. The town was founded on August 15, 1879, by John Pemberton and others who moved from Santa Clara County. The first post office was opened in December of that year. Today Reedley has a population of approximately 30,000 residents and is the county seat for Kern County. It is also home to many famous institutions including Pepperdine University and Reedley High School (now known as West Valley College). The history of Reedley begins with its location on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River. At one time this led to some difficult times for the community because it neighbored Rancho Nieta, which had exclusive rights to farm land near the river. However, over time Reedley managed to build up a strong economy thanks to its close proximity to major cities like Los Angeles and San Bernardino County while still maintaining its rural feel. One such key player in this early development was John Pemberton, who played an important role in helping relocate many people from Santa Clara County during that initial period when Ridgefield wasn’t yet established as an agricultural center north of LAX Airport. After briefly visiting Ridgefield during his visit around 1880 he recommended it for incorporation into Kern County under then-County Judge William Irvine because “the site appears very good … there are few places better adapted for agricultural purposes than at present our present station on [the] Arroyo Seco” (Goudreau 1990: 261). Along with fellow ranchers Don Waddell and Jens Nielsen, Pemberton helped organize what would become known as “The Old Timers” faction within local politics which favored maintaining open access to ranch land through grazing rather than selling it off piecemeal like other farmers were doing at that time (Fowler 1977: 9). This group successfully lobbied against annexation by neighboring Pasadena sometime between 1887-1889 due largely to their opposition to roads being built through ranch land they considered their own personal Property (Waddell 2006; Fowler 1977: 10-11). During this time period too several other communities formed around Ridgefield including Northridge, Gorman Canyon and finally Redondo Beach which would eventually merge with Ridgefield in 1912 (Fowler 1977: 271-272; Fenton 1976). By 1881 however much of what we now know about Reedley came courtesy of John Pemberton himself who donated five acres adjacent to his original Rancho Niguel home so that individuals could establish themselves hereabouts without fear of displacement or confiscation from nearby landowners (Goudreau 1990: 263). Today much remains unchanged about those early days including the fact that today's downtown area bears little resemblance whatsoever thereto apart from a few scattered businesses dating backto before 1978 when Barton's grocery store arrived along Main Street (#3)
