The first post office opened in 1909 and closed in 1912; it was reopened by mail service under the name Easton until 1914 when it changed its name to Reedley because of local opposition toGETS (George Adolph Staggs Electric Supply Company). The first Europeans to visit Reedley were the Spanish in 1769. The area was explored by Guadalupe Land and Donation, a group of American volunteers led by Captain James Folsom, during the Mexican-American War. The land was purchased from Mexico by John Reed on July 8, 1836. A post office called Reedley was established at this location on October 16, 1836. The town's name originated from John Derry's farmstead located nearby. Reedley grew rapidly after it became a station on the California Central Railroad in 1868. The railroad brought settlers and businesses to the town, which became an important center for agricultural production and trade. In 1902, Reedley incorporated as a city under state law. By 1960, the population had reached 506 residents. In 1984, Reedley merged with neighboring City of Vallejo to form Vallejo-Reedley Township. In recent years, Reedley has been struggling with economic recession and traffic congestion caused by increased development in Vallejo and other nearby municipalities. However, Mayor Jimmie Willmot has announced his intention to keep the city open until it can find a new source of revenue in order to keep it afloat financially
