The community took its name from John Reed, an American Revolutionary War general who had served as a brigadier general under General George Washington during that conflict. In 1875, Reedley became part of what was then known as Contra Costa County. In 1899 it annexed sections of Alameda and Contra Costa counties which made it one of the most populous communities within those counties today. The population reached 10,000 by 1910 but has since declined slightly due to suburbanization and demography changes outside of Reedley itself. However, recent growth has seen renewed interest in this semi-rural community with plans for a new high school and other development projects0n the horizon0nd its potential for becoming a primary center for agricultural production within Contra Costa County given its rich soil resources1).
