The first people to live in what is now Redwood City were Native American traders who visited the area from time to time. In 1853, J P Coyote and his family founded Coyote Station on Hwy 41 near present-day downtown. From this location they traded goods with other parts of northern California and made trips down into Mexico during the winter months. In 1854, John Wigglesworth settled on a small piece of land east of Coyote Station and named it Redwood City after its redwoods which he saw growing along Highway 101. On July 25, 1854, Wigglesworth submitted a plat of what would become Redwood City to US Senator Donahue for consideration pursuant to Section 10 ofranch Act No 15 (1851). On October 3rd same year proceedings were taken under said act to select one representative from each county in Santa Clara Valley for Congress assembled at Palo Alto on December 5th next; but no vote was taken owing to lack of numbers within those counties... In 1865 an act was passed entitled An Act To Encourage Public Works And For Other Purposes Authorized By The General Assembly Of California That Made various changes therein affecting public lands then lying within our limits including that part now called Redwood City...On November 14th 1865 a company consisting principally of disbanded soldiers had camped upon portions now occupied by citizens of this place since 1861 under circumstances which demanded their presence thereon until such time as orders could be issued compelling them home...it having been found necessary either becauseOf constant warfare or military stores required heretofore unknown quantities have lately arrived from San Francisco occasioning great anxiety on accountof their scarcity particularly among officers corps stationed hereabouts” Redwood City experienced rapid growth following World War II due largely to new housing developments created around San Bruno Mountain which overlooked the city center. This growth continued through the early 21st century as Bay Area Rapid Transit reached RedwoodCity via BART station in 1971 and new freeway construction increased traffic congestion around downtown streetside businesses and residences typical of Northern Californian metropolises during that period. However, recent economic recession has led to declining property values and community momentum slowest since before 2000 according to Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s 2017 report “Red Wood Cities: A Status Report”
