The first post office for Redding was established on February 15, 1865. In 1868, John Sutter announced his intention to patent new land east of Sacramento which would become Redwood City. On January 25th of that year he opened up what is now downtown Redwood City with an audience of investors including Lickliffe and others from Sutter's company. They laid out streets and platted blocks with names such as Battery Park Row (now Telegraph Hill), North Beach (now Fisherman's Wharf), Masonic Square (now Golden Gate Park), Excelsior (now Civic Center) and Cedar Grove (later renamed Glen Ellen). The original story goes that James Lickliffe saw some redwoods down by Coyote Creek while walking his dog; this must have been before they had trees growing around them like today! After looking at some more logs he said to Sutter "I'll take a look at these" which led to their first purchase - two hundred acres of forested land near what is now Fremont Street within easy reach of San Francisco! Lickliffe left for China soon after this purchase but never returned so it's likely he logged all those trees himself! By 1870-71 when word got out about this great piece of property west of Sacramento - mainly because there were no other towns or villages close by - people were lining up to buy into whateverSutter might have patented next! And so Arroyo Seco grew rapidly into one of California's most heavily populated cities! Eagerrepreneurs quickly started building homes here – everything from simple log cabins to elaborate stone mansions – with many homes standing until recently still standing today including many dating back to 1872-1875 when oil boomed across America making things even more challenging for real estate developers! One popular option back then was simply buying an existing house outright – something easily done given how much money people had just taken in from gold mining + selling state citizenship + Virtually free transportation via stagecoach right around these parts!) Today there are numerous shopping districts available scattered throughout downtown: Gough & Green Streets Historic District being one example; Polk Street also has quite a few options if you're looking for high end retail along with several restaurants/bars/nightlife options if you're looking for something less busyxD . If you're into hiking or biking though I highly recommend checking out Muir Woods National Monument nearby as well as various wineries surrounding Redwood City including Butte County Wineries & Vineyards.. Three years later Spanish explorer Rafael Moraga discovered gold and other minerals near what is now downtown San Francisco; this led to increased settlement throughout much of Alta California during that era. In 1847 Leland Stanford Jr.'s father purchased about 8 acres (3 hectares) of land adjacent to Hetch Hetchy Valley from George Poston for $8 per acre ($2 million today). With help from his brother Edwin then working on some new projects at Singleton Ranch (now within Menlo Park), Leland Stanford soon began developing his holdings including many homes on Parnassus Avenue which still stand today as part of Downtown San Francisco's redWOOD CITY HEIGHTS neighborhood
