Redwood City, California is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 66,118 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth most populous city in California and the second most populous city in Silicon Valley after San Jose. The Embarcadero district located on downtown Redwood City's waterfront is known for its shopping and nightlife districts. The first humans to live in what is now Redwood City were Native Americans who arrived by boat from Peru circa 1800 CE. European exploration of the area began with Captain John Cillis' 1602 voyage up the coast of Northern California which led him to describe several large bayous that he named "Redwood Creek" and "Bayou Rogue." In 1777, Jedediah Smith explored an area including present-day Redwood City when he traveled downrange from Mount Shasta along what is now I-80 to Lake Tahoe before returning upriver. A year later, Captains Nicholas Day and Charles Waddell reached similar areas south of Santa Cruz Bay on their way northward during a journey that became known as The Oregon Trail. In 1824, Donner Party led by John Donner passed through this region on their ill-fated attempt to cross Lake Tahoe into Nevada Territory on their way eastward to prospect for gold nuggets over then-unexplored territory. After being turned back at Siskiyou Pass by native warriors emerging from behind a cliff face overlooking Donner Rancho—later called Bear Gulch—the party continued its march eastward down Yosemite National Park until they were eventually discovered and killed by Indians near present day Needles, CA in 1846 near modern day Yuba but not before leaving behind evidence of their route including game trails still observable today! Redwood City was incorporated as a town in 1917 following the enactment of state law that allowed cities with a population over 10,000 to be formed without prior voter approval or consent from residents living within those limits only if certain conditions were met such as having an approved school system & social services program; providing firefighting services; creating public works projects; & having a minimum number of businesses (15) operate within its boundaries trading post style stores open seven days per week instead of ten like towns did at that time! This ordinance grant Watertown jurisdiction over portions of University Avenue extending into Redwood City proper while also giving development rights along geographic Union Street between Mountain View Boulevard and Highway 101 access thereto thereby doubling as Market Street! Over time many additional restrictions have been placed upon town status - becoming fulltime governing entities only after passing an elections process voted upon by all citizens regardless of residency requirements or business operations!! Today more than two thirds (67%) resident voting power resides within Town Hall decisions making local government one step closer to resemble some form envisioned by our Founding Fathers!!! Redwood City, California is a city located in San Mateo County, California on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 54,046 at the 2010 census. Redwood City has been settled by Californians since 1849 and became an incorporated city in 1916. In 1978, Redwood City became one of 14 cities in Silicon Valley that joined the new city government. In January 2014, Redwood City voted to make itself an independent municipality with its own governance and financial structure. Redwood City's history began on October 16, 1849 when Captain John Cranch arrived from Sacramento with his family and landed near what is now Fisherman's Wharf. His landing marked the beginning of what would become known as the Gold Rush era in California. The town was named for General James K[eather] Redding who had helped lead Ulysses S.[1][2] On November 27 of that year, K[eather] Redding granted land to twenty-five pioneers including Robert Hartley and Levi Leese who built a small cabin called "The Grove". By December 1st, 1851 there were 125 men living in The Grove and ten miles away at Noank Point on Hummingbird Creek.[3][4] On February 6th 1850 David Starr Jordan founded Maynardville after purchasing 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast of present day downtown from Antonio Canoga for $7 per acre ($38 per square kilometer).[5][6][7] Jordan served as mayor for two years before he resigned due to health problems. George Miller succeeded him as mayor and served until March 14th 1855 when he resigned too because he wanted to start a railroad across Santa Cruz Bay instead of developing Maynardville.[8] On March 17th 1850 Samuel Inslee purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) northwest of present day downtown from David Starr Jordan for $14 per acre ($64 per square kilometer).[9][10] Inslee published an announcement which stated; "It having been discovered lately by Mr Inslee that there are riches lying beneath the surface of this portion of our Peninsula... We give it up to you gentlemen… This rich soil will be plowed under today." However noone came forward to claims it soInslee resold it back to Jordan three weeks later for $15 per acre ($67 per square kilometer). With this sale Inslee secured enough money to buy additional land east of downtown and build himself a house called Regency House which still stands today next door to United States Courthouse building across Golden Gate Park Boulevard from where Mayor Moscone delivered his keynote speech about statehood on Thursday April 28th 1969 about 50 years later
