The first European to visit what is now Redwood City was Jedediah Smith in 1836. He named it for an old redwoods which he saw near where he was exploring the Peninsula. In 1839, Captain John Foulke surveyed and charted the peninsula and selected the name Redwood City as its location due to its close proximity to land that had been claimed by both parties since ancient times. Redwood City became part of San Francisco when it was incorporated as a city on April 15, 1851. In 1906, sections of Redwood City were annexed into Palo Alto making it one municipality with two cities combined total population: 67,873 people living on over 4 square miles (12 km²). On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in World War II starting with a general strike across America that ended on December 8th with surrender from Japan without any decisive American victories or losses; Redwood City didn't participate in this strike but remained largely unaffected by war-time social conditions such as poverty and rationing which characterized much of Northern California even after Pearl Harbor occurred. Redwood City was founded in 1868 by Captain James W. Richardson and his wife, Eliza Jane Richardson. They named their new town after the redwoods that were located nearby. The Richardsons built a small log cabin on the site of present-day Redwood City High School and started to grow the town. In 1872, they opened a post office in the small town and began to collect taxes from residents. By 1875, Redwood City had a population of 100 people. The Richardsons also built a large house in downtown which still stands today. In 1882, they married Anna Loring Johnston and moved to Redwood City permanently. They continued to grow the town and added more buildings until their death in 1942. In 1932, Redwood City became an incorporated city under California law.
