Gun sights history in Redwood City, California began with the first rifle sights set up by Captain George W. Butler at his ranch in 1868. The rifles used both fixed and removable sights, but Butler's initial design was a Fixed Disk Sight (FDS), which he patented in 1870. The FDS consisted of a metal disk attached to the barrel by a band. When the gun was fired, the metal disk would move along the barrel and hit each part of the target directly. This method of firing became known as "Cannon Fire" because it allowed for accurate hits on small targets from far away. In 1875, Adolphus Cockerill patented asight called an Interchangeable Disk Sight (IDS). The history of Redwood City began with Commodore John H. Sloat's arrival in 1846 on the ship "Plymouth" from Hong Kong. He founded a small town on the site of what is now Redwood City proper on March 26, 1848. The original name for Redwood City was North Beach because it lay north of Market Street on present-day Beach Street. North Beach served as the primary business district and social center for early residents until it burned down in 1868 during an evening fire that destroyed most of what remained of North Beach. In 1853, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt offered to buy allertown (present day downtown) from its founders for $10 per acre ($ ). The offer was accepted and North Beach became part of Redwood City proper. In 1865, Don Pedro Sanchez donated land off Telegraph Road to build a new plaza called Sanchez Park which included a jail and four churches including one built by Judge James Steuart Richardson (the father-in-law of Pacific Gas & Electric Co.) In 1870, Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased 640 acres east side of Coyote Creek from Leander Culp Hearst for $6000 (). Redwood City is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 68,291 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and extends into Contra Costa County to the north and east. It borders the cities of San Rafael and Antioch to the northwest, Hercules to the northeast, Oakland to the southeast, and Burney Junction to the south. The first permanent residency in Redwood City was in 1853 when Joel Palmer arrived from Maine with his family. The town site was chosen because of its numerous redwoods which were then being logged for their timber industry. The name "Redwood City" originated from a man's find of a redwood tree near what is now Pacifica Avenue in 1866. A year later Englishman George Stephenson discovered oil along East Bay Road near today's Redwood Shores Shopping Center and named it "Redondo Beach". In 1868 David Owen started a flour mill on First Street between El Camino Real and Pacifica Avenue while other early businesses included an bakery on Second Street (now Mason Street), a hotel/motel on Third Street (now Fourth Street), a grocery store on Fourth street between Masonic Boulevard and avenues Avenues (now Solano Avenue) - all within 100 feet of each other down First Street - an opium den on Masonic Boulevard before it became known as "The Ghetto" due to its association with that activity - two banks, one insurance company and three churches were also founded during this time period. In 1884 John Denny founded what would become California Distributive Sugar Company next door to his sugar refinery at 6th & Mission Streets; #1 Bank building still stands today as part of Chevron USA headquarters complex adjacent lot.. In 1925 Don DeVito started American Motors Corporation manufacturing Buick products at chassis plant adjacent current day Kaiser Permanente Medical Center campus area; major expansions occurred at this time including Elm Drive Assembly Plant where Chevrolet assembly began in 1958 - becoming one of North America's largest automakers prior to its merger with GM in 1999; major new facilities constructed during this time include Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Building located immediately east side following donation byHP founder Perry Donelson which remains today one of Silicon Valley's most prominent business campuses.. The first permanent European settlers in Alameda County were Spanish Missionaries who arrived on February 17, 1776. They named the place San Francisco after Lieutenant General Mariano Vallejo, commander of the Mexican army that had invaded California during what is now known as the Mexican-American War. After several months of exploration and reconnaissance, Vallejo recommended to his superiors in Mexico that they establish a presidio here to protect Californias east coast against British colonization and attack by Native Americans. On July 20, 1821, Presidio Captain José Joaquin de Obregon declared Gold Rush began and soon thereafter walls were built around the Presidio to prevent Native American access while gold was being mined nearby at Sutter's Mill and other locations. The first post office opened in 1826 with John Peters as its first officer. By 1830 there were 24 post offices in Alameda County including 12 inside Mission San Francisco de Asís (MISSION FOLIO VIII). In 1851 when Alameda County became part of California it lost its mission status which meant that no new churches or government buildings were constructed within its boundaries but it retained its name because of proximity tomission areas such as those near Dublin Hills and Rockridge Heights etc.).
