The first buildings were erected between 1868-1870 and consisted of homes, a store, bank and jail. By 1880, however, construction of new downtown buildings had become common due to increasing population density and development along Polk Street which ran through what is now downtown Redwood City. During this time period many famous people lived in or worked in Redwood City including Japheth Kīnigāneʻa (1797-1865), General Kearney (1848-1924), Drury Lane theater founder Richard Dreyfuss (1901-1983) and Governor Hiram Johnson (1875-1964). In 1906 Mayor James Wickersham enacted legislation creating Atherton Park adjacent to what is now Civic Center Square in order to provide more open space within walking distance for residents and businesses within walking distance of each other as well as serve as an incubator for new entrepreneurs. This park would eventually grow into one of Silicon Valley's most popular tourist destinations with over 400 restaurantsand nightclubs available inside as well as several sports stadiums such as SAPPAC Stadium which hosted both American football games during World War II before being replaced by Candlestick Park later in that decade. In 1969 David Stone Martin developed Rockville Road into one of Silicon Valley's longest thoroughfares with his early success Storey Industries Incorporation having their headquarters there until they relocated to Menlo Park after Reed Hastings bought them out in 1987 When railyards closed throughout much of Northern California during prohibition many jobs went away with them including many employees at Almaden Oil Company who moved production to Menlo Park when that company merged into ChevronTexaco during prohibition During World War II local industries produced munitions used by US forces such as Lend Lease ammunition produce by American Cyanamid Chemical Corporation adjacent to how today’s Googleplex sits while other companies like United States Steel near where BART stops produce parts for cars manufacturing at Carrier Corporation prior to their merger becoming part of United Technologies Corporation during WW2 Allied Signal nearby produced radar equipment Postwar growth continued with tech companies such as Hewlett Packard coming online followed by Barnes & Noble before they left following technology changes starting around 1990 known collectively today under Silicon Valley names such as Facebook , Apple Computer Inc., Oracle Corp., Intel Capital Management Services

They named it El Dorado because of the great quantity of gold they found there. There was no gold but some valuable timber that had been shipped down from Northern California since before Spanish exploration started in 1769. A small mission called Mission San Francisco de Asís was built in 1821 by Father José Altamirano after he arrived from New Mexico with news of an extensive area of rich golden ore near Sonoma Valley. In 1825, part of Rancho Santa Clara became part of Alameda County when it was organized as part of new Mexican statehood following independence from Spain. In 1853, Iron John Brown's raid on Golden Gate National Recreation Area resulted in the most serious conflict between American settlers and Native Americans that would soon lead to civil war: The Battle of Bear Creek Bridge near Petaluma took place on October 27,1853; during this skirmish three men were killed and ten were wounded by Indians led by Chief Winnetou ( Wahkonah ). On February 26, 1861, nine people died when a locomotive carrying cargo derailed along Mason Street just north of downtown; this disaster led to increased regulation and management for railways throughout America which beganipples throughout Redwood City including incorporation as a city on May 25th 1889 with 9% growth rate over four years! During World War II many local companies produced munitions like Ellerbe Munitions Company 3rd Battalion 5th Marines who built airfields all over North America including at Iwo Jima; Bakelite Corporation who manufactured windows for military use; Douglas Aircraft Company who made components for B-29 bombers; Hewlett Packard Company who developed early computers
