One popular tourist attraction is Redwoods National Park which can be visited without leaving Redwood City.

Redwood City is a city on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, California. The population was 146,814 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from redwood trees that are found in the area. The first permanent settler in what is now Redwood City was James Irvine, who came with his family in 1847 from England. In 1851, he founded the town of Rodeo on land he had purchased from Sonny Bonney and his brother John Bonney. At first, Redwood City consisted of only Irvine's home and a few small businesses. However, by 1854, it had become an important commercial center due to its location along Highway 101 adjacent to two major rivers: the Santa Clara River and the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources; there were abundant redwoods and other trees for lumbering and building materials. By 1865, Redwood City had built several churches, schools, hospitals and other public buildings. Its growth was so great that by 1870 it had outgrown Irvine's original home on First Street (now Page Avenue). A new home was built at Fourth and Mission Streets; this became known as "The Town Hall." The townsfolk voted to incorporate as a city on December 3rd of that year. Redwood City experienced rapid growth during its early years; by 1880 it had over 100 buildings and 1,000 residents. However, because of air pollution caused by industry in nearby Palo Alto (then part of San Francisco), many people moved away during the 1890s for cleaner climates or for greener options closer to campus at Stanford University (then part of Berkeley). Nevertheless, Redwood City remained one of Northern California's most significant cities until World War II when its economy went into decline due to autos being replaced by planes and automobiles
