On October 16, 1850 Ayerceda sold title to John Waddell following an arbitration hearing between Waddell and another party involved in the purchase - Daniel Webster & Co., old members of the Board of Trade (British merchants who had assisted Mexican efforts to purchase portions east of Lake Merritt). In 1851 Waddell built a barkentine building known as "the adobe" near today's Civic Center Square (then bounded by Fourth Street, Stockton Street (now Market Street), Temple Place and Powell Boulevard) for his wife Nancy Venable Adair Waddell who ran wagons carrying goods down Market Street from Presidious Heights across San Francisco Bay to load at Eureka Point on Point Lobos where they unloaded at high tide then carted back up MarketStreet past caseysresidence into town for further loading before putting their wagons back onto rigs at Eureka Landing opposite Fort Funston days later
