In 1869, Russian immigrant Fyodor Dostoyevsky wrote a short story about life in Russia's Far East called "Red Wood". Published posthumously in 1902 under the title "Life In Siberia", it tells the story of an American clerk named Edward Eager who travels to Siberia as part of Russian army reinforcements during World War I and falls in love with a local girl; they marry but she dies before he can return home to America to tell her story In 1870, Gold Rush era entrepreneurs founded Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) here as one result of an agreement between PG&E executives Daniel Burnham and Mark Hopkins . burnham later became General Manager; Hopkins served until his death in 1922 .redmond wittman joined PG&E as Vice President Service Delivery late 1920s ....the companys first electric line ran from Daly City downtown through Seal Beach until 1949 ....in 1957 PG&E merged with Southern Pacific Railroad ; shortly thereafter service began over SF-Oakland bridge ..........in 1969 PNE merged with NorthernCalifornia Edison Co .............
