In 1951, when it became an incorporated city, Redwood City had a population of 23,569 people. Redwood City began as an agricultural village founded by Captain John Pemberton in 1847 on land he had purchased from the Native Americans near what is now downtown redwoods National Park. First called Pembertonville after its captain, it soon developed into a town with a post office and two stores. In 1851, Captain Pemberton sold his holdings to three other men: James Irvine (the brother-in-law of Governor John Fenton), Hiram Sutter (a settler from Sacramento), and Samuel Morse (the son of inventor Samuel Morse). It wasn't until 1860 that the first school building was erected; it was used as a barn for local farmers until 1902 when it was replaced by the current structure which still stands today.. In 1881 there were 10 residents; by 1886 there were 30 and by 1890 there were 50 residents! During this time period also saw construction of several churches including St Andrew's Episcopal Church (1886) which served as center for religious activity until 1949 when it burned down; Christmastime gift from Mrs Kapp to Mrs Hitchcock 1954 gave new life to old building 1913-1914 brick convent/parish church built on site 1893+ converted 1922–1925 into motel/residential buildings used extensively through 1970s & 1980s before demolition 1984–1985 . Thereafter only 3 small parcels remain zoned residential with large commercial zoning potential
