Redwood City is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 69,362 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and the second-most populous municipality of Contra Costa County behind Newark, New Jersey. The name Redwood City came from redwoods, which are found in abundance throughout the city. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1853 and named their new town after General John Cranch's ranch near Richmond. A post office called Redwood City was established in 1858, and has been located there continuously since that time. In 1866, several citizens of San Francisco moved to Redwood City to escape the smogging by their cities on the Peninsula. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to agricultural land and its status as a servicemarketing center for container shipping out of San Francisco Bay Area ports such as Oakland and Emeryville. In 1916, during World War I, Redwood City became one of four towns (the others being Soquel,[1] Vacaville[2] and Vallejo) within Contra Costa County that agreed to become military training areas for US troops serving on overseas battlefields. In 1990, following passage of Proposition 13 through Mendocino County voters' ballots,[3][4] Redwood City passed an ordinance prohibiting "non-citizens" (currently naturalized Californians) from owning or renting property within its boundaries without having first registered with the city government.[5][6] The ordinance served as a model for other cities across California that have enacted similar measures since then;[7][8][9] it also helped set back plans by developers for large demolitions of older homes as part of gentrification initiatives throughout most major American cities during this period. Although never fully enforced,[10][11][12] early examples of red tape associated with housing registration led some residents to form unofficial "citizen's patrols" meant to enforce compliance with rules governing how properties were used or rented; these patrols enjoyed significant local media coverage until disbanded sometime in the late 2000s when more openly relaxed zoning regulations made it easier for people who had residency permits but no useable home units to rent out those units indefinitely under new management guidelines instead (see also: Doorman row).[13]) In 2000–2001 work began on developing what would become known as Silicon Valley – an area now encompassing much of downtown Hayward – adjacent neighborhoods such as East Palo Alto and Mountain View;[14] this project ultimately failed because heavy opposition from fears about eminent domain [15], rising construction costs ($160 million compared to $52 million budgeted), traffic congestion caused by expanded BART service into nearby Livermore,[16]), and concerns about displacement among low-income residents living near high-density development led many opponents to campaign against it.[17][18]:p 22 One reason why Silicon Valley failed was that venture capitalists were unwilling or unable at that time either to invest money into real estate or develop viable business models specific thereto outside traditional technology companies like Google Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Amazon Web Services Co., Microsoft Corp./Internet Explorer etc.; while they did invest heavily into other types of “Gentrifying” endeavors such as mixed-use development around Ballou & Alma Streets in east Hayward – creating yet another layer atop already extensive residential subdivision growth going on just south/west thereof –Teresa Park & neighbouring undeveloped industrial lands eastbound onto Sloat Boulevard between El Sobrante Avenue & MacArthur Boulevard
Redwood City is located in Contra Costa County, California. The city was founded on December 17, 1853 by Captain John Sutter and his party of Forty-eight men as the new town of Redwood City. The name came from the redwoods that were found near the original site. The first post office in Redwood City was established on April 15, 1854. It was called Post Office Park and served as a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1875, the city annexed part of Walnut Creek to make it its own municipality. On November 6, 1888, Redwood City became an incorporated city with ahome rule charter. On November 3, 1992, RedwoodCity opened its first downtown shopping district with over 100 stores and restaurants including Macy's Arcade and Sears Department Store
