Redondo Beach is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 64,361 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast, about 35 miles south of downtown San Diego and about 20 miles north of La Jolla. Redondo Beach's name comes from Spanish meaning "red sand" or "calcium sand." The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo who landed on shore near what is now Redondo Beach around May 1st 1542. On December 5th 1821, Father José de la Luz y Arellano founded Mission Santa Margarita del Río Bravo in present-day Redondo Beach after landing there with his Franciscan missionary companions. In 1872, when California became a state, the mission was secularized and its land turned over to the town of Redondo Beach for development as part of Rancho Niguel Alta Californiana (later renamed Rancho Santee). In 1890, new streets were laid out through what are now parts of East Village and North Park neighborhoods when San Diego Municipal Railway (SDMR) began streetcar service between DowntownSanDiego and South Park along El Cajon Boulevard. In 1906 local businessmen John Leland and Harry Chandler developed Pier 39 into one of America's leading commercial fishing ports by dredging Channel Islands Passage (now called Lemon Cove) just east of its namesake beach for deep water vessels carrying tons of living seafood to markets all over North America. This great commercial achievement helped make Redondo Beach an attractive location for homebuilders during World War II as demand for military housing soared across Southern California due to mobilization efforts during the war effort. From 1942 until 1945, many American servicemen lived in barracks erected along Marinelli Drive which extended from PCH southward into today's Northeast Side neighborhood adjacent to Naval Base Imperial City/Yuma before being dismantled following end of hostilities. In 1958 Redondo Beach Mayor Harry Baughman hydraulic fracturing operations commenced at Monterey Shale Field under license from Secretary Ernest Moniz resulting in dramatic increase in local production including oil shale that has been used locally since 1903! Thedrilling results led to prompt approval by both federal agencies responsible for regulating such activities –the US Department Of Energy’s Bureau Of Land Management (BLM)and National Renewable Energy Laboratory –for large-scale production known as “fracking” beginning November 3rd 1959; this led directly to increased economic activity within our community becauseidiels could be produced without disturbing surface water supplies essential for agriculture or other important municipal services
Redondo Beach was founded on May 17, 1903 by a group of businessmen and soldiers from San Diego. The town was named for the red sandstone that is abundant in the area. The first post office in Redondo Beach opened on July 1, 1903. Two years later, the first school was built. In 1908, the first oil well was drilled in Redondo Beach. It became one of the most important businesses in town because it supplied energy to local homes and businesses. In 1915, Redondo Beach became an incorporated city and began to develop as a bedroom community for San Diego County. The following year saw the opening of its first movie theater, which would become one of the most popular entertainment venues in town until it closed in 1978. In 1926, Redondo Beach voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by San Bernardino County; this event led to increased development within the boundaries of Redondo Beach and helped increase its population by over 50%. The downtown business district flourished during this time with many large department stores such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck opening their doors to shoppers. Many famous residents including Roy Rogers and Bing Crosby grew up or lived close to their families here including Vista del Lago Boulevard (now Harbor Drive) where they spent their summers playing golf or fishing at Laguna Seca beach before returning home for winter break
